The translation work I was doing today had a lot to do with Halloween, and this reminded me of that evening nearly nine years ago in Tainan, where a guy I then fancied and I were having a walk after that lovely Hakka dinner. We then bumped into a group of kindergarten kids shouting in unison "trick or treat" in Chinese to the shops in the street. I remember saying to that guy, "since when has Halloween become part of our life here?"

I also remember the delightful October temperature on that evening, and him pointing afar to the watermelon field he usually did his post-dinner walk at.
